Stress and Problems 29/10/10

We had planned to do our main filming with our band today however Bethany received a phone call from the bass player saying how they couldn't get access to their instruments because the person whos house they were at left to go on holiday that morning. This then meant we could do none of the filming we planned to do and couldn't do it until he got back from holiday. We had no choice but to postpone filming until next week.

27/10/10

Bethany and Youssef went to a friends house today to do some shots of her sister and her boyfriend sitting on her bed to do a shot we storyboarded involving heart shaped fairy lights. It was successful and we managed to capture some footage we were aiming for. What we learnt from this experience is that we should always make the mise-en-scene match what we storyboard. The fairy lights were not the ones we were expecting our friends sister to have. However it worked better then we originally thought because it matched the overall theme of the music video which is love a lot better. The fairly lights where heart shaped with wings on them. This matched well with the shot and suited our theme.

Today Youssef and I (Rene) filmed  some shots in Wimbledon, with me holding various signs, amongst the hustle and bustle of the streets which was done on purpose in order to capture the idea of love being everywhere in our everyday lives. We also filmed some shots of me sitting on a wall, experimenting with a few closes up and long shots. After ,we went to a local park an filmed some footage of me on the grass at a high angle to create this idea that  my romantic interest is behind the camera and I was looking up at him.We used a clear plastic wallet, folded it and put it over the camera lens to create this dreamy, idyllic effect which the inspiration came from a shot in a Script video. Just before we left, we saw this woman on the park bench and asked her if she could hold a sign for us which fortunately she did.

filming

25/10/10
We shot more individual shots at Bethany's house. We came up with some ideas to put the signs on peoples hands. We felt this could represent a more meaningful and personal message being displayed by the people in the shots. We casted a friend from school who was willing to draw a message on their hand which says 'i miss you' this not only presents the theme of love but also matches some lyrics in the song we are using. This idea was influenced by a book called Post Secret where people present messages on many different surfaces through different media. We put her in various shots, high and low angles and in different lighting. Also we tried to put the message in the foreground in full focus, and the girl blurred in the background. We also tried a message without words and used a heart icon, through the use of icons we tried to achieve a contrapuntal message by painting a heart on Bethany's finger. We felt this could represents hate for love, the song is about love and we wanted to show there are ups and downs to relationships as the lyrics could suggest and that love doesn't always guarantee a successful relationship.

Through this experience we discovered that we can portray the message of love in different forms through icons (symbols). Through this experiment we were able to be more creative with our style of mise-en-scene.

moving forward

20/10/10
Today we made a banner for our band which would be part of the mise en scene in the back of the shot when the band are playing. Our band are called 'Maybe Maybe' so on the banner we've painted this in red because we thought this colour had a real edgy feel to it. Our plans to add a black outline changed because we thought the connotations of the two colours would be  punk rock and our band is indie so we didn't want to stray from that. When we were painting however, one of the Maybes came out thicker than the other, but instead of starting again we've decided to incorporate this into our band logo.

Decision Day

We have decided to call the band Maybe Maybe, we feel this name is catchy, memorable and fits in with names of bands we have looked at previously of bands that share the same genre for example You Me At Six and The Script. The bands age ranges from 17-18 and this is our prime audience for the band. The bands back story - Met at college, formed a band and played small gigs in pubs and events and got spotted and signed by a small alternative label. They are just starting out and Did I Say is their first single released.

Today Rene finshed the institutional research and made a start on deconstructing the lyrics and Youssef and Bethany uploaded the footaged filmed on Saturday. Also Youssef printed out the questionnaires and is ready to get participants to fill it in.

Video Influences

This video is our main influence for our music video, it incorporates the concept of using notes and cards with messages on them to communicate and engage with the audience. We want to use this idea and also using many different people in various locations.we like that the signs are hand made because it looks really authentic and also the lack of light that is present in the long shots of the band performing because it gives this really closed in and intimate feel that is present when many bands play gigs. The cut aways from the band to the various people from different walks of life was really enagaging and we want to use this in our video because in this way we can relate to a wider audience and not just theindie rock crowd,so we're not limiting ourselves.

We like the varied angles and cutaways of the band You Me At Six in this video for Kiss and Tell and we plan to use some of these techniques in our video. In the context of this music video, we wont be using much of the theme, the general party atmosphere. This is because the lyrics would not match the visuals, such as the party vibe. However the introduction to their video is very inspiring, this is because we like the idea of introducing the band before we see them . Also the pictures look naturally placed and not stylised, which we aim to avoid in our music video. This is because we aim to be individual and natural, as posed to be visuallly elaborate.

We really like some of the angles and shot ideas used in this video and they have incorporated the sign idea which we are using. We found the signs written on their hands really edgy and different. The change in focus, where the writing on their hands goes from shallow focus to full focus is interesting.the various close ups of the lead singer and his lips are quite intimate shots and creates a relationship with the viewer. The close ups of the guitars and the amplifiers are a clear reference to the band being performers,a key generic convention of indie rock videos.

First shot

16/10/10
Today we started filming, we filmed parts of the cutaways to the couples that will be shown in the music video. We managed to film one couple today in the Twickenham location. The couple was Youssef a member of the group and his girlfriend Alex. We shot the couple in many areas in the park at night, this is because we wanted to use candles in the scene in order to inhance the romatic setting. Here are some shots of us on location

Also today we made more signs for the couples to hold in different designs and colours.

A Good Start

Today in class we made very good progress, Rene had completed the questionnaire and now we plan to begin to ask a number of partispants to take part in our questionnaire. Youssef and Bethany started researching band logos, and produced the following information:

You me at six- This logo does suit the style of the band, the scruffy hand writing and balloons represents the bands image, which is a young teenage group. The scruffy hand writing adds a personal touch, because it can show the soulful heart filled music they produce, such as there song ‘There is no such thing as accidental infidelity'. The balloons create a lighthearted feel and it, signifies partying, youth and is more representative of songs like 'Kiss and Tell'.

Biffy clyro- There logo is very simple and very noticeably San-serif. There is an image next to the name, which looks something like a horseshoe or an oval partly rubbed out. It is simple and shows less is more with this type of genre.

Feeder- This is a very plain and simple logo, block capital letters and black writing. It does what it says on the tin and is very to the point. It shows pride in their music and suggests confidence. It isn’t very welcoming or visually appealing; it is a bit too blunt.

Fast Slow Sequence Experiment

For a prelimanary task our group made two film sequences and had to edit them to one fast piece of music and one slow. The person in the film could not move in the frame so we had to think more about our shots and how we would edit them together. The main thing we learnt from the task was editing in time to the beat.At first we editied and realised some of the movements within the frame were off and it does make a difference. We had to listen to the beat again and again to get a feel for how we would edit.We also learnt how important framing was,and that everything in the frame must be of siginificance and meaning because it has an impact on the overalll meaning. Finally I think we learnt that when filming the camera doesnt have to be moving all over the place, but if we make the angle and the mis en scene in the shot interesting, having a static shot can be just as engaging as if the camera was moving.

Screen shots

The last three lessons we have been screen shotting inspirational shots from various music videos of indie and rock bands. We have been influenced by some of the ideas within the videos and hope to use similar shots effectively in our video. We have written about what we like about the shots, what we think they represent and what we will do to change them. We looked primarily at The All American Rejects music video 'Dirty Little Secret', My Chemical Romance's 'I'm Not Okay' and You Me At Six's 'Kiss and Tell'. Our main idea is based around the 'Dirty Little Secret' video with the various locations, people and cards they hold up. The band location we plan to use is in a garage which is also done in the 'Im Not Okay' music video. We are going to use a wide rang of camera angles to make the most of our locations and to connote all the messages we want to get across. Examples of the shots we were influenced by are below.

location searching part 2

30/09/10
Today we met up at 8:30 in the morning outside Richmond park, we decided that we would go looking for locations in our local area. The reason why we wanted to look for more local areas is because we want the video to look more authentic in the sense that all the locations that the audiance viewed was not immediately recognisable. The secondary purpose of today's outing was to experiment with potential shots we might use in our music video
