Evaluation

20/12/10

Today We're planning our evaluation, discussing ideas together to help form the final evaluation, e.g. the format to be used aswell as indivudual commentary contributions. With this we hope to develop these ideas futher. We learnt from this period how important it is to always think about what we've learnt at each stage of the creative process.

Blast from the past 17/11/10

Whilst uploading things on to our blog, heres an old video diary that features Rene and Youseff based on their filming day in Wimbledon.

Added some edits to the video

13/12/10
On looking at our footage of the band,we saw some elements of mise-en-scene that we had accidently captured whilst filming and didnt want, for example the curtains and the railings in the drama studio. Therefore we experimented with the colour contrast of the band footage, to see if we could darken it, to make it less visable, which proved partially successful.

Also we wanted to make the band image more intersting so we added blinks, when you notice Luke is playing the guitar. It was in time to the beat of the music, to futher match visuals with sound.

Also we speeded up some of Abduls drumming to make it more enthusiastic, aswell as match his image as an actual drummer.

uploaded videos on to youtube 12/12/10

Today we have uploaded all our various video footage onto our youtube page!!!!!!

uploading new people images

After reading our audience feedback, the main critcism was that there lacked some consistency throughout. So we decided to go ahead and reshoot various people holding signs infront a white board, which we thought along with making the video black and white in editing would look very authentic and original as its rare that majority of a music video would be black and white.Today we've uploaded the reshot footage.

Wednesday 8 December 2010

All in a good days work!!

Yesterday Youseff finished the Digipak which is looking amazing, having added the bands record label which he created and the song titles.Rene has converted some of our powerpoints into PDF to upload on to the blog aswell as upload our band interviews onto youtube.Today we're also filming the opening to the music video which was inspired by a you me at six video.

More signs

Just before the end of lesson Youseff decided to make two new signs for couples to hold ,which Rene photographed for the blog along with our other signs.

Spoofs

Today we're editing the digipak spoof we did yesterday aswell as the rest of our music video. We filmed the intoduction to our band interviews which is being edited also.Work is still being continued on the digipak and the social networking sites and we're making a start on the important evaluation.

Friday 26 November 2010

sooo fussy!!!

After looking at our previous band interviews we decided it wasn't the best it could be and we could probably benefit from more pictures so youseff and bethany reshot the interviews which are on the bands youtube and took additional pictures.more is better than less!!!

progress continues

Today, rene created a Facebook and MySpace for the band, while youseff made some additional album covers for the digipak and came up with the idea to do a poster for a gig for our band.Bethany continued editing and converted our files with band interviews ready for the band YouTube account which rene created.

Photos part one

Today we planned to take some photos of the band for the digipak and the website to promote them as an up and coming band. Sadly Luke was ill so we only managed to take a few shots of Alex, Abdul and Ryan individually and on Thursday we plan to take the same of Luke and then some of the band all together. The photos taken today were successful and we tried various angles to see what worked best.

Sunday 14 November 2010

12/11/2010

We took out the camera this afternoon to get another shot of a couple to use in our video. We took out our friends Ibby and Shamaila and filmed them on a few locations with a sign we made previously. We deliberately filmed them in the afternoon when the sun would be setting and we would get nice natural lighting and this was successful.

finshed digipack research

Filming the band

We got our band together and into the drama facility we were using and put up the banner we made and set up all the instruments, microphone, lights etc and started filming according to the storyboard. We got a wide range of footage of each band member and experimented with lights, angles and static filming and some tracking shots around the band as well. The lead singer of the band Alex was really enthusiastic and we feel this definitely added to the realism. We made sure everyone was dressed to match our band image research and this again adds to the realitic band image we want to achieve. With all the different angles and shot idea we came up with we think with it intercutting through the video along with the on location shots we have done through the weeks of couples, the finished product will look really good. Bethany is going to start editing the footage together on the next opportunity. We also took promotional photographs of the band for the website, we decided to shoot a lot of them in black and white because Rene noticed a lot of bands with the same genre of our band do this.

10/11/12

We completed the band image

Tuesday 9 November 2010

Monday 8 November 2010

08/11/10

We uploaded all the footage we got in London on Saturday and the fireworks today and Bethany began editing whilst Youssef and Rene continued with research into band image. We have also decided to do the primary footage of the band in a drama facility we have access to in order to get some more interesting lighting shots. We felt a garage may be quite limited in space and we were unsure we'd be able to create the effect we want so we thought it would be beneficial to use a different location.

Lighting strikes twice

Unfortunately because we were not given a charger, our camera had very low battery from filming the day and night before, therefore we thought it would not be benefical to get the band together for nine minutes worth of filming and decided it would be best to do it on Wednesday (10/11/10).

Filming in central London and Fireworks

06/11/10
We all went to central London today to get some shots that we've storyboarded including people on their own and couples together. We went to Trafalgar square and did a shot of a couple standing still hugging for 5 minutes in a crowded area and we plan in editing to speed up this footage to be 6 seconds so the couple remain still whilst all the hustle of people move quickly around them. We got some other shots of couples that we met in London and some of friends that came with us. Bethany also got some footage of fireworks going off in the sky later that evening.

Genre research

03/11/10
We have completed the genre research today, which gives detail about the indie rock genre itself.

New band

01/11/10
We have decided to bring together another band as we have found the current members to unreliable and may harm our progress. We have asked people in our school who are willing to film this sunday as planned. However we still need to find one forth member to be in the band, if we cannot find another member to be in the band then we will decide to involve Youssef in the final video as another band member. We learnt that we must cast people that are able to make the set date, and to regularly update the cast with any new information and to hear back from them.

Stress and Problems 29/10/10

We had planned to do our main filming with our band today however Bethany received a phone call from the bass player saying how they couldn't get access to their instruments because the person whos house they were at left to go on holiday that morning. This then meant we could do none of the filming we planned to do and couldn't do it until he got back from holiday. We had no choice but to postpone filming until next week.

27/10/10

Bethany and Youssef went to a friends house today to do some shots of her sister and her boyfriend sitting on her bed to do a shot we storyboarded involving heart shaped fairy lights. It was successful and we managed to capture some footage we were aiming for. What we learnt from this experience is that we should always make the mise-en-scene match what we storyboard. The fairy lights were not the ones we were expecting our friends sister to have. However it worked better then we originally thought because it matched the overall theme of the music video which is love a lot better. The fairly lights where heart shaped with wings on them. This matched well with the shot and suited our theme.

Thursday 28 October 2010

26/10/10

Today Youssef and I (Rene) filmed  some shots in Wimbledon, with me holding various signs, amongst the hustle and bustle of the streets which was done on purpose in order to capture the idea of love being everywhere in our everyday lives. We also filmed some shots of me sitting on a wall, experimenting with a few closes up and long shots. After ,we went to a local park an filmed some footage of me on the grass at a high angle to create this idea that  my romantic interest is behind the camera and I was looking up at him.We used a clear plastic wallet, folded it and put it over the camera lens to create this dreamy, idyllic effect which the inspiration came from a shot in a Script video. Just before we left, we saw this woman on the park bench and asked her if she could hold a sign for us which fortunately she did.

Monday 25 October 2010

filming

25/10/10
We shot more individual shots at Bethany's house. We came up with some ideas to put the signs on peoples hands. We felt this could represent a more meaningful and personal message being displayed by the people in the shots. We casted a friend from school who was willing to draw a message on their hand which says 'i miss you' this not only presents the theme of love but also matches some lyrics in the song we are using. This idea was influenced by a book called Post Secret where people present messages on many different surfaces through different media. We put her in various shots, high and low angles and in different lighting. Also we tried to put the message in the foreground in full focus, and the girl blurred in the background. We also tried a message without words and used a heart icon, through the use of icons we tried to achieve a contrapuntal message by painting a heart on Bethany's finger. We felt this could represents hate for love, the song is about love and we wanted to show there are ups and downs to relationships as the lyrics could suggest and that love doesn't always guarantee a successful relationship.

Through this experience we discovered that we can portray the message of love in different forms through icons (symbols). Through this experiment we were able to be more creative with our style of mise-en-scene.

moving forward

20/10/10
Today we made a banner for our band which would be part of the mise en scene in the back of the shot when the band are playing. Our band are called 'Maybe Maybe' so on the banner we've painted this in red because we thought this colour had a real edgy feel to it. Our plans to add a black outline changed because we thought the connotations of the two colours would be  punk rock and our band is indie so we didn't want to stray from that. When we were painting however, one of the Maybes came out thicker than the other, but instead of starting again we've decided to incorporate this into our band logo.

Decision Day

We have decided to call the band Maybe Maybe, we feel this name is catchy, memorable and fits in with names of bands we have looked at previously of bands that share the same genre for example You Me At Six and The Script. The bands age ranges from 17-18 and this is our prime audience for the band. The bands back story - Met at college, formed a band and played small gigs in pubs and events and got spotted and signed by a small alternative label. They are just starting out and Did I Say is their first single released.

Monday 18 October 2010

18/10/10

Today Rene finshed the institutional research and made a start on deconstructing the lyrics and Youssef and Bethany uploaded the footaged filmed on Saturday. Also Youssef printed out the questionnaires and is ready to get participants to fill it in.

Video Influences

This video is our main influence for our music video, it incorporates the concept of using notes and cards with messages on them to communicate and engage with the audience. We want to use this idea and also using many different people in various locations.we like that the signs are hand made because it looks really authentic and also the lack of light that is present in the long shots of the band performing because it gives this really closed in and intimate feel that is present when many bands play gigs. The cut aways from the band to the various people from different walks of life was really enagaging and we want to use this in our video because in this way we can relate to a wider audience and not just theindie rock crowd,so we're not limiting ourselves.

We like the varied angles and cutaways of the band You Me At Six in this video for Kiss and Tell and we plan to use some of these techniques in our video. In the context of this music video, we wont be using much of the theme, the general party atmosphere. This is because the lyrics would not match the visuals, such as the party vibe. However the introduction to their video is very inspiring, this is because we like the idea of introducing the band before we see them . Also the pictures look naturally placed and not stylised, which we aim to avoid in our music video. This is because we aim to be individual and natural, as posed to be visuallly elaborate.

We really like some of the angles and shot ideas used in this video and they have incorporated the sign idea which we are using. We found the signs written on their hands really edgy and different. The change in focus, where the writing on their hands goes from shallow focus to full focus is interesting.the various close ups of the lead singer and his lips are quite intimate shots and creates a relationship with the viewer. The close ups of the guitars and the amplifiers are a clear reference to the band being performers,a key generic convention of indie rock videos.

First shot

16/10/10
Today we started filming, we filmed parts of the cutaways to the couples that will be shown in the music video. We managed to film one couple today in the Twickenham location. The couple was Youssef a member of the group and his girlfriend Alex. We shot the couple in many areas in the park at night, this is because we wanted to use candles in the scene in order to inhance the romatic setting. Here are some shots of us on location

Also today we made more signs for the couples to hold in different designs and colours.

A Good Start

Today in class we made very good progress, Rene had completed the questionnaire and now we plan to begin to ask a number of partispants to take part in our questionnaire. Youssef and Bethany started researching band logos, and produced the following information:

You me at six- This logo does suit the style of the band, the scruffy hand writing and balloons represents the bands image, which is a young teenage group. The scruffy hand writing adds a personal touch, because it can show the soulful heart filled music they produce, such as there song ‘There is no such thing as accidental infidelity'. The balloons create a lighthearted feel and it, signifies partying, youth and is more representative of songs like 'Kiss and Tell'.

Biffy clyro- There logo is very simple and very noticeably San-serif. There is an image next to the name, which looks something like a horseshoe or an oval partly rubbed out. It is simple and shows less is more with this type of genre.

Feeder- This is a very plain and simple logo, block capital letters and black writing. It does what it says on the tin and is very to the point. It shows pride in their music and suggests confidence. It isn’t very welcoming or visually appealing; it is a bit too blunt.

Fast Slow Sequence Experiment

For a prelimanary task our group made two film sequences and had to edit them to one fast piece of music and one slow. The person in the film could not move in the frame so we had to think more about our shots and how we would edit them together. The main thing we learnt from the task was editing in time to the beat.At first we editied and realised some of the movements within the frame were off and it does make a difference. We had to listen to the beat again and again to get a feel for how we would edit.We also learnt how important framing was,and that everything in the frame must be of siginificance and meaning because it has an impact on the overalll meaning. Finally I think we learnt that when filming the camera doesnt have to be moving all over the place, but if we make the angle and the mis en scene in the shot interesting, having a static shot can be just as engaging as if the camera was moving.

Screen shots

The last three lessons we have been screen shotting inspirational shots from various music videos of indie and rock bands. We have been influenced by some of the ideas within the videos and hope to use similar shots effectively in our video. We have written about what we like about the shots, what we think they represent and what we will do to change them. We looked primarily at The All American Rejects music video 'Dirty Little Secret', My Chemical Romance's 'I'm Not Okay' and You Me At Six's 'Kiss and Tell'. Our main idea is based around the 'Dirty Little Secret' video with the various locations, people and cards they hold up. The band location we plan to use is in a garage which is also done in the 'Im Not Okay' music video. We are going to use a wide rang of camera angles to make the most of our locations and to connote all the messages we want to get across. Examples of the shots we were influenced by are below.

Today rene started a powerpoint looking at the big lables and Indie lables where our band would of initially started out.

location searching part 2

30/09/10
Today we met up at 8:30 in the morning outside Richmond park, we decided that we would go looking for locations in our local area. The reason why we wanted to look for more local areas is because we want the video to look more authentic in the sense that all the locations that the audiance viewed was not immediately recognisable. The secondary purpose of today's outing was to experiment with potential shots we might use in our music video

A Good Day

15/09/10
Today we made alot of progress, Rene made a questionnaire asking a few questions about our band. We plan to ask a few partispants to take part in our questionnaire. Youssef and Bethany resarched band logos, we believed this would help us think of our own band name and logo and possibly their theme. They produced the following document:

You me at six- This logo does suit the style of the band, the scruffy hand writing and balloons represents the bands image, which is a young teenage group. The scruffy hand writing adds a  personal touch, because it can show the soulful heart filled music they produce, such as there song ‘There is no such thing as accidental infidelity. The balloons create a lighthearted feel and it, signifies partying, youth and is more representative of songs like Kiss and Tell.

Also through out the lesson we made a list of the following names, which we will choose or add on to:
-Maybe, Maybe
-Meet Me
-The Newbees
-Forget it
-Save Me?
-Saved

We made a questionnair to ask are potential audiance what they think of our band, the idea was to have around 10 people listen to the song then fill out the questionnaire.
Here is the questionnaire:

Lesson Planning

13/09/2010
We had our first in lesson plan of the video and what jobs we would assign to each member of the group, we also decided what genre our song is. We found bands which we could use as influences for our genre indie/rock, these were: Biffy Clyro, The Script and Feeder. Rene is going to do the band research into management and tour companies etc in order to make our promotional website and advert more realisitic, plus band image and Youssef and Bethany are primarily focusing on location ideas and audience research. We also looked at what the band members of Pinstripe, Biffy Clyro, The Script and Feeder wear and went on some clothing websites to get an idea of the image we want our band to portray.

Also in today in the lesson we created a mind map involving initial idea that came to mind when we heard the song, which Rene finshed off .Then Rene created a mood board from this.

Location searching part 1

26th August
In our first meeting we decided that we should look for different locations to film. So Youssef, Rene and Bethany went off to central london, and took pictures of very well known British land marks like Big Ben, The London Eye, Trafalgar Square etc. This is because our band is British and is first trying to break into the UK market before anywhere else. In our music video we want the audience to know that this is a British band, relating it to British indie rock, which we believe may appeal to our audience.

Then we went to a totally differnt location, we went to Twickenham, and found a beautiful park, where there were a lot of tree's, amazing statues and gardens. We thought that this kind of location strongly related back to the very loving lyrics, and we want to use this location and include a lot of different couples, and this on top of the other locations visited throughout the day means we have an endless amount of locations to use.

The first meeting

18th August
Over the summer holidays, We decided to come together and simply discuss and share ideas about different aspects of the music video. In particular we focused on locations and the people we wanted to be in the video.

Bethany had already spoke to a band that were willing to be in our music video. She arranged for us to start shooting their parts sometime during October half-term. We also decided that we did not want old people or children in the video, this is because when reflecting on what genre the song is and the audience we are trying to sell to (teenage), it is not very typical to see old people, so we decided to focus on teenagers in particular.

Also we thought about the locations that we would film, and planned to go location searching at a later period.

Sunday 12 September 2010

Here are some images for when we first went on location, we simply decided on the holidays to go out to central London for inspiration
